More sad news over the weekend with the passing of Leon Spinks after battling prostrate cancer for several years. Leon won the light-heavyweight gold medal as part of the American dream team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. In 1978 he sensationally outpointed Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight world championship in only his 8th professional fight. When Michael Spinks beat Larry Holmes, they became the first brothers in history to win the heavyweight world title. Leon was always very approachable and a regular attendee at the International Hall Of Fame in Canastota. Hopefully they will consider a special posthumous award as he was undoubtedly a people’s champion.
